Poisson d'Avril

Literally “April Fish,” these are found in chocolate shops all across France for April Fool’s Day when young children slap paper fish onto unexpecting adult’s backs, crying “Poisson d’Avril” as they run away. Probably more to the story but this gives us an opportunity to eat cute chocolate fish! Order online here. $6.75

Pix is on the Move!

Nine years and some change ago a little red spot popped up on Division street serving Belgium beers and exotic French pastries to curious customers sitting under sock monkeys and wondering what the heck Dim Sum Yum Yum was all about. While we have enjoyed serving beer floats to first dates and pink sparkly macarons to wide eyed 5 year olds from this corner on Division, we are ready to liven things up with the help of our friends at Pix on N. Williams. The opportunity to purchase a building in the Kerns neighborhood arose in 2011 and the entire Pix team will be making 2225 E. Burnside their new home later this year! The new 3000 square foot Pix will still offer colorful macarons and late night desserts. But to complement the 150+ Grower Champagne and sparkling wine list we are heading over the Pyrenees to Spain. Bar Vivant will accompany the frenchie Pix on site as a proper tapas bar – where the Txakoli is poured high, the croquettes are cheap, and the napkins are thrown on the floor. In the summer months, patrons can spill out into the courtyard for a game of pétanque, an outdoor French flick or an afternoon plate of oysters with a bottle of Chartogne-Taillet Cuvée Fiacre 2002. We will be open until 2AM to fill your churro & chocolate cravings, offering musical entertainment several nights a week and continue to party it up with Bastille Day festivities, Gastronomical Trivia and a few Spanish themed events to boot (who wants to eat thick cut bloody steaks with tons of Basque cider?!)

When the new location opens in late August expect to see a new line up of desserts and chocolates as well as your current favorites. Plus, our ice cream specialties like the Cognac Banana Shake and Pix Ice Cream Sandwich will be on deck when the weather approves. Mark your calendars for January 12th, 2013 when Pix celebrates 10 years of Portland shenanigans. Yes, there will be a really big party with lots of confetti.

Any parties interested in occupying the current Pix locations please contact David Marlin at (503) 789-2884 or dmarlin@marlingroup.com

Pix "Kinder" Surprise Eggs

If you have ever traveled out of the country you have probably run across Kinder Eggs - dark and white chocolate eggs with a really cool toy in the center. Since they are not legal in the states (and the chocolate is really bad) Pix has decided to make them in house! Quality chocolate (yes, even the white chocolate is delicious!) with a frenchie collectible charm. All charms are part of a larger series so collect them all!   $4.75 each  $30/Pack of 6 BUY ONLINE

(Toy charm is not edible and not recommended for children under 6.)

Chardons

NEW! These chocolates are a shot of top shelf booze with a chocolate chaser! They are fabricated in an ancient and time consuming method - liquor syrup fills impressions made in a box of starch and are left to crystallize for 36 hours, creating a fragile sugar shell with a boozy liquid center. They are then dipped in 75% Tanzania origin chocolate. Eat these with napkin in hand! Available in limited edition flavors. Past Flavors have included:

Black Maple Hill Premium Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Nux Alpina Walnut Liqueur from Austria

Michele Chiarlo Grappa di Barolo

Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolongé Green Chartreuse

Clase Azul Reposado Tequila

Trimbach Kirsch Grande Réserve Cherry Brandy

Pierre Ferrand Cognac Selection des Anges 1er Cru

Making sugar syrup. The starch indentations are then filled with a mix of the syrup and alcohol of choice.

Fillings are covered with more starch and allowed to sit for 4 hours before flipping to allow for even crystallization on both sides. After 36 hours, the oustides have fully crystallized and fillings are able to be removed from the starch.

Each Chardon is carefully dusted, as they are extremely delicate with liquid centers at this point. They are then dipped into 75% Tanzania origin chocolate.
